Truly a place of superlatives, there is no doubt that Africa is a continent of extremes. It is extremely young, extremely dry, extremely large, and sadly, extremely poor. Africa is young in the sense that more than half of this continent is under 25 years of age.

Without a doubt, Africa has more than its fair share of surprises and quirks. However, these are not the only ones that make it different from other continents. There is so much more to Africa than what meets the eye. Here are some of the fun facts about Africa that not many of you probably know.

Fun Fact #1

Probably one of the most interesting fun facts about Africa is that the breadth and length of this unique content is almost the same. Yes, you have read that right. The continent measures around 4,600 from east to west, and from north to south.

Fun Fact #2

The East African Rift zone, dividing the Nubian and Somalian tectonic plates, serves as the location of some significant discovers of the human ancestors conducted by anthropologists.

This active spreading rift valley is believed to be the true heartland of humanity in which a big part of the human evolution has possibly took place several million years ago. The discovery of Lucy’s partial skeleton in Ethiopia way back in 1974 has sparked a widespread research in this region.

Fun Fact #3

In ranking the 15 biggest landowners of the world, three of the top 15 happen to be Africans. Swazilan’s King Mswati landed on the 12th spot with 6,704 sq mi of Swaziland’s land under his name.

The 10th spot belongs to Lesotho’s King Lestie III who owns 11,718 sq mi of Lesotho.

Finally, the 4th spot is occupied by Morocco’s King Mohammed VI with 175.6 meter acres of Morocco.

Fun Fact #4

One of the fun facts about Africa is about King Sobhuza of Swaziland who had 70 wives when he died. Mswati III, his soon, has taken over his position and for the past three decades, he has been a king who accumulated a total of 15 wives.

Following this rate, if he gets to live the age of his father of 83 on his death, and he continues to marry at his present state, he will never even manage to get to half the number of his father’s wives with only 33 wives.

However, the more important thing is that Mswati has more siblings compared to other monarch or royal in the entire world, with 96 of them all in all.

Fun Fact #5

Africa only has 7 countries whose flag doesn’t contain black or red, namely Somalia, Rwanda, Niger, Mauritania, Nigeria, Cote d’Ivoire, and Sierra Leone.
